DIY Beard Products (Shampoo, Oil, Balm)

After receiving numerous requests for how-to guides for these products, I've decided to write a tutorial on how you can make your own beard shampoos, oils, and balms. For anyone interested in purchasing pre-made versions, you can do so in our store, Here! You can also purchase the essential oils required, Here

To begin with, let me briefly describe each of the products. A beard shampoo is used to naturally soften and cleanse the beard without stripping essential natural oils from it. A beard oil is used following the cleansing to further soften and style the beard, as well as prevent the skin beneath it from becoming dry or irritated. Beard oil is perfect for use during the initial growth phase. Beard balm is primarily for use in longer beards for styling and preventing "fly-away" hairs. Balms are essential for the working professional who wishes to maintain facial hair in a work environment.

The recipes for beard shampoo and oil essentially involve simply combining the ingredients; the shampoo and oil are also the cheapest to make. The beard balm requires melting the carrier products prior to adding essential oils for additional health benefits and the desired scent.

There are virtually no limitations on the scents or specific health benefits you can add to any of the products. You can make products specifically for hair growth, for sensitive skin, or for any other number of issues. It's important to note that none of these products, or any other product known to man, can force the growth of new hairs. What they can do is to thicken and strengthen your current follicles, with results like those of my personal model (The Bard) pictured below.

Beard shampoo recipe:

Ingredients:
              - 2 Teaspoons Jojoba or Coconut oil
              - 1/4 Cup of Castile Soap (liquid form)
              - 1/8 Teaspoon of Peppermint essential oil
              - 1/8 Teaspoon of Melaleuca essential oil
              - 1/4 Cup of distilled water

Combine oils and soap, top off with distilled water. Note that essential oil substitutions are necessary depending on the desired scent and affect. Makes four ounces of shampoo.

Woodsy Scented Beard oil recipe:

Ingredients:
              - 1 Tablespoon of Almond oil
              - 1/2 Tablespoon of Jojoba oil
              - 1/2 Tablespoon of Argan oil
              - 3 Drops Lavender essential oil
              - 3 Drops Lemongrass essential oil
              - 3 Drops of Siberian Fir essential oil
              - 2 Drops of Eucalyptus essential oil

Combine all ingredients in a one ounce GLASS dropper bottle.

The above recipe is just one example with an infinite number of possible carrier and essential oils depending on the desired fragrance and affect.

Premium Beard Balm recipe:

Ingredients:
              - 1/4 Cup Carnauba wax
              - 1/4 Cup Shea butter
              - 2 Tablespoons of Coconut oil
              - 2 Tablespoons of Meadowfoam seed oil
              - 1 Tablespoon Vitamin E oil
              - 20 Drops Siberian Fir essential oil
              - 12 Drops of Frankincense essential oil
              - 8 Drops of Rosemary essential oil

Using a double-broiler, melt together all carrier (non-essential oil) ingredients. Once melted, add essential oils and pour into a four ounce GLASS jar. Allow mixture to harden, which may take up to three days using Carnauba wax. This balm is a little on the firm side, and should be used by placing a nickel sized amount onto the hands, melting by rubbing the hands together, and then applying to the beard. You can make a softer balm by using alternative waxes, such as Beeswax or Candelilla.

The above recipe is just one example, but is our favorite balm - there are a number of simpler and more cost-effective options which may sacrifice on quality, benefits, or results.
